The world of skincare is vast and can be intimidating to some. Especially if you’re not quite sure where to start. The funny thing is that when it comes to caring for your skin, women’s products really aren’t that much different than men’s. Interestingly, the difference is the way they are packaged and marketed. But, that doesn’t mean you have to spend hours figuring out what regimen is best. In fact, the trick is to make a basic routine and stick to it. Too many products on the skin can actually irritate it rather than help. If men’s skincare is new to you, take a look at this week’s blog.

Skin Type

First of all, before going out and buying a bunch of products you need to figure out what your skin type is. There is a range of products that cater to each different skin type, and you don’t want to get caught using the wrong one. For instance, if you have dry skin, using a product that is meant for oily skin could make your skin drier. No need to be discouraged though, finding out your skin type is easy. Start by washing your face with a mild cleanser, pat dry, and then wait for about 5 minutes. Next, grab a tissue and hold to your face for a few minutes. If the tissue stays dry, you have dry to sensitive skin. If the tissue has an abundance of oil on it, your skin type is oily. But if the tissue is only mildly oily, then you have combination skin.

Morning and night

Now that you know your skin type, you’re halfway there. Go to a drugstore and pick up a cleanser that is suitable for your skin. The first step to better skin is, you guessed it, washing your face! Washing your face morning and night is ideal, but could potentially leave you with dry skin. If that’s the case, just splash some water on your face in the morning. In addition, make sure to use lukewarm water. As a matter of fact, water that’s too hot or too cold could be damaging.

Protect

Next, always apply a moisturizer with SPF. Gone are the days when everyone was oblivious to the damage the sun can do. Continued sun exposure could cause the skin to fade, get dull and even crack. Interestingly, your skin will continue to absorb UV rays, even when it’s overcast. For this reason, sunscreen is a must every day of the year.

Shaving

Although beards are in right now, there are some who would still rather have a smooth face. If that’s the case, take a shower before you get out the razor. The reason being, warm water softens up the hair follicles and will give you a much better shave. Check your razor and make sure it is sharp. A dull razor doesn’t work as well and could also lead to cuts. Additionally, when you’re finished don’t skip the aftershave. Not only is it a disinfectant, but it can help tone your skin and reduce razor burn. Simply look for one that is unscented, and has either witch hazel or aloe vera as an ingredient.

Exfoliate

To keep your skin looking fresh, exfoliate a couple times a week. However, make sure you use an exfoliant that is good for your skin type. You don’t want to use something too harsh if you don’t need it. It’s recommended to shave after you exfoliate because it creates a nice smooth surface.
