What is a chemical peel and how does it work?

A chemical peel is a rejuvenation technique that is used to improve the appearance of your skin (typically face, neck or hands). A chemical exfoliate product consisting of natural substances, such as enzymes or alpha-hydroxy, glycolic, lactic or fruit acids, is applied to your skin. This works in combination with other ingredients to cause a chemical reaction which exfoliates the skin and eventually peels off. The skin shed promotes cellular turnover resulting in skin that is healthier, smoother and less wrinkled

3 Basic Types of Chemical Peels

Superficial (lunchtime) Peel

Gently exfoliates the outer layer of the skin (epidermis) using an alpha-hydroxy or another mild acid. This type of peel can be done as often as once a month and can treat:

• Fine wrinkles
• Uneven skin tone/mild discoloration
• Dryness
• Acne

Medium Peel

• Uneven skin tone/moderate discoloration

Deep Peel

Deeply penetrates the middle layer of skin to remove damaged skin cells using trichloroacetic acid or phenol. This peel is used on the face and can only be performed once, and can last decades, to treat:

Are chemical peels painful?

For a truly perfect peel, the answer is no. Chemical peels may sting a bit but typically do not cause much pain. Some peels may cause stinging, redness and irritation at first, but as the skin begins to adjust, these conditions will lessen. Most people’s skin will begin to heal soon after the gentler peels. Some individuals might use creams to reduce the effects of some medium peels as they may sting a bit more and cause some swelling, redness and irritation.

What can I expect after a chemical peel?

1. Superficial Peels: Typically require one to seven days to heal. Lotion or cream should be applied while the skin heals, as well as daily use of sunscreen.
2. Medium Peels: Require 7 to 14 days to heal. The skin will initially be red and swollen for the first 48 hours, then the skin will crust and peel off within 14 days. Mild lotion or creams can be applied and sun exposure should be avoided during healing. A follow-up appointment is necessary to observe progress.
3. Deep Peels: Will require 14 to 21 days to heal. The treated area will be bandaged and the skin must be soaked four to six times daily followed by the application of ointment. A thick moisturizer will need to be applied and sun exposure should be avoided. Several follow-up appointments will be necessary to monitor progress.
