Most people have heard about Microdermabrasion at some point in their lives. But, many are unsure of what it actually is. It is a cosmetic procedure that is fairly non-invasive. It’s a procedure that exfoliates and removes the top layer of dead skin cells. Also, microdermabrasion stimulates collagen and reveals smooth skin. In addition, blemishes, sun spots, fine lines, and dull skin usually improve with regular treatments. There are two different kinds of Microdermabrasion.

Crystal Microdermabrasion

The first kind of microdermabrasion is called crystal microdermabrasion. For this type, a handpiece releases crystals onto the surface of the skin. This results in a gentle abrasion or “polishing” process. Dead skin cells and the crystals are suctioned off the skin. The most common abrasive within the last 20 years has been aluminum oxide. Interestingly, aluminum oxide is one of the hardest minerals, second only to diamonds. However, aluminum oxide has gotten a pretty bad rap lately. Using aluminum oxide on the body has been linked to cancer. Luckily, there is an alternative called sodium bicarbonate. This mineral is a lot softer and not as effective, but definitely a safer option.

Diamond-Tip Microdermabrasion

The next type is called diamond-tip microdermabrasion. This kind also works with a handpiece. Diamond microdermabrasion machines typically come with different sizes and coarseness. This is good for different skin types and the depth of resurfacing. The diamond-tip handpiece gently exfoliates the skin, removing dead skin cells. In the same fashion, dead skin is removed by being suctioned off by the handpiece, or afterwards. Out of the two options, diamond-tip is safer to use, especially around the eyes. This is because there is a risk of getting stray crystals into your nose or eyes when getting crystal microdermabrasion. Also, the diamond-tip is more flexible to use in sensitive areas, and on sensitive skin.
