Not only does winter bring the holidays, but most can expect cold weather too. If you’re anything like me, winter is the season of chapped lips. Basically, my lips are cracked from November to March. Not only does the winter air cause lips to crack and chap, but they hurt too! Plus they can crack so bad that they bleed. It’s almost impossible to wear any lipstick, instead resorting to copious amounts of lip balm is a must. Rather than succumbing to the inevitable, let’s look at ways to cut the crack for good.

Oils

You may be aware of the numerous benefits of oil when it comes to hair or skin. But, certain oils are also really helpful for curing chapped, dry lips. First off, it may sound strange, but rub a little ghee on your lips. A small amount of ghee can give your lips a moisturized feel for a lot longer than other options. Another type of oil that can be used is milk cream. Milk cream has a high fat content, which makes it a great moisturizer that is natural. To apply, put a small amount of milk cream on lips for a few minutes. Run a cotton ball under warm water and wipe the cream off. Also, mustard oil is great for healing chapped lips. Mustard has incredible healing properties, and has long lasting results. Dab a small amount on lips in place of your regular lip balm. Coconut oil has been very popular the last couple of years. It can be used in many ways, as part of your daily beauty regimen or even in the kitchen. In addition, coconut oil will help heal dry, chapped lips from the winter air. Lastly, cantor oil is a great lip treatment. Apply to your lips as just the oil, or try mixing it with glycerin for an easy way to treat chapped lips.

Create a Barrier

Sometimes, it’s better to create a barrier between your lips and the harsh winter elements. Be preventative and use these suggestions before dryness sets in. To start, a great cheap option is petroleum jelly. It’s a great moisturizer, and can provide a great barricade from winter air. Just use like you would a normal lip balm. Next, you can also invest in glycerin. Unlike petroleum jelly, glycerin is fairly viscous. Apply a couple drops to your lips before bed, and you’ll wake up with super soft lips. In addition, aloe vera is not only a great preventative tool but a great healing substance as well. There are a lot of products with aloe vera as one of the ingredients. However, a lot of people opt to get aloe vera directly from the plant. It can be found at most plant nurseries. Rub the raw aloe vera juice onto your lips, and repeat for a couple days. This can solve your problem of dry, wind burned lips almost completely.

The Sweet Stuff

If you’re anything like me, you’ve got a big sweet tooth. But sweets are not just good for tastebuds. Applied to your lips they have great healing properties. Mix glycerin with a little honey for soft, supple lips. Lip exfoliants have become all the rage lately. Make a paste of honey mixed with sugar and put directly on lips. This remedy will gently exfoliate dead skin off of your lips, leaving them nice and soft. Another product growing in the beauty world is rose petals. If you soak rose petals in milk for a few hours, and make into a paste you can use the mixture on your lips just as often as lip balm. Of course, many people eat cucumber to help get clear skin. But, putting the juice from a cucumber on your lips for 5-10 minutes can help with chapped lips too.

Diet

While putting different at home remedies directly on your lips is great, also be aware of your diet. Ensuring that your are healthy on the inside will affect what you look like on the outside. First and foremost, drinking plenty of water is probably the most important. Drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day will help keep your lips moisturized. Also, eat a healthy balanced diet. Make sure you eat a good mixture of fruits and vegetables. In addition, take a multivitamin and maybe some additional supplements. Certain vitamins are especially good for hair, skin and nails. For example, vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E.

Kiss Away

There is nothing worse than having dry, cracked, or chapped lips. Sometimes, the winter air can make it seem impossible to avoid these problems. By using oils, sugars, and products like petroleum you can heal or even prevent many of these problems.
