Do you suffer from dry skin? If so, you are not alone. Everybody has had dry skin at some point in their lives. But there are things you can do to reduce the chance of continually dealing with dry skin. When skin doesn’t retain a sufficient amount of moisture, it becomes dry as a result. This can happen from bathing too frequently, using soap that is harsh on skin, age, and sometimes medical issues. Sometimes people in colder climates can get dry skin from the cold, dry air. This time of year, those in northern states may be suffering from red, raw or itchy skin. Cold weather usually means low humidity, indoors and outdoors. There are many things you can do to combat dry skin, all of which are relatively inexpensive.

Moisturizers

The first step to getting rid of dry skin is investing in a good moisturizer. Not all of them are too expensive, but still work very well. A good moisturizer will rehydrate the top layer of skin cells, and seal in any moisture. Most of the time, the thicker and greaser a moisturizer is, the better it will work. Some of the best moisturizers happen to be the least expensive. For example, petroleum jelly and mineral oils are great options. Yet you can find them for cheap at nearly any drugstore. These products don’t contain any water, so they are best used when the skin is still damp. Use them after you shower, or wash your hands and they’re slightly damp. The less greasy a moisturizer is, the more likely it has both water and oil. While these are not as effective they are certainly more pleasing to the eye.

Diamond-Tip Microdermabrasion

The next type is called diamond-tip microdermabrasion. This kind also works with a handpiece. Diamond microdermabrasion machines typically come with different sizes and coarseness. This is good for different skin types and the depth of resurfacing. The diamond-tip handpiece gently exfoliates the skin, removing dead skin cells. In the same fashion, dead skin is removed by being suctioned off by the handpiece, or afterwards. Out of the two options, diamond-tip is safer to use, especially around the eyes. This is because there is a risk of getting stray crystals into your nose or eyes when getting crystal microdermabrasion. Also, the diamond-tip is more flexible to use in sensitive areas, and on sensitive skin.

Humidifiers

Another great way to banish dry skin is by using a humidifier. These are especially great to use in the winter. Humidifiers resupply the air in your home with moisture. You’ll notice how much of an impact the humidity has on your skin. Your lips, joints, and extremities will be a lot healthier. They will become more durable, have a better color, and less cracks in the skin. Not only that, but using a humidifier can help with peeling skin too. Your face will look healthier, and more supple with regular use of your humidifier.

Showers

Most of us know that prolonged exposure to hot water will dry out your skin. By limiting the amount of time you spend in hot water, you will decrease the chance of getting dry skin. Therefore, take shorter showers. Try to take one shower a day, at around 5-10 minutes. Any more than that and you may strip away the skins oily layer. In turn, this will cause the skin to loose moisture. Also, try not to take steaming hot showers, opt for lukewarm instead.  Limit yourself to one 5- to 10-minute bath or shower daily. If you bathe more than that, you may strip away much of the skin’s oily layer and cause it to lose moisture. Use lukewarm rather than hot water, which can wash away natural oils.

Soap

Cut down on the amount of soap you use. A lot of soaps and cleansers strip your skin of natural oils, causing dry skin. A great alternative is to buy moisturizing soaps from brands like Dove or Olay. Or you could even get soap free cleansers. These will all help you get clean while maintain the moisture in your skin. In addition, try to stay away from any bath sponge that is too abrasive. Bath sponges, washcloths, and loofah can all damage the skin. If these are something you can’t live without, just be very gentle with them. When drying after a shower, don’t rub your skin, pat dry with a towel instead.
