Many of us look in the mirror each and every day and always see our “flaws” and insecurities and wish that we could change them. We also know that there are options out there, but wonder “is it safe”? Deciding to have plastic surgery is a personal choice that you don’t take lightly, so you should be sure that you are aware of the risks associated, but also know what questions to ask your surgeon to ensure you are making the right decision for yourself. Here are some things you should know and some things to consider.

All surgeries, including plastic surgery, carry risk. Possible complications, although unusual, include blood clots, infection at the incision sites or fluid buildup under the skin. People with a history of cardiovascular and other diseases have a higher risk of developing complications. In order to have the best outcome with your surgery, there are a few things to consider when choosing your plastic surgeon:

  1. Ensure your plastic surgeon is board-certifiedSome doctors may be board-certified in a certain specialty but not plastic surgery, so it’s important to know that your surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The ABPS website provides a search that will verify your surgeon’s certification and can be found here. For additional information on the importance of board-certification, please read this blog from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

  2. Your surgery is performed in an accredited and licensed surgery centerAccredited facilities are subject to inspections by credentialing agencies which require the facility to operate in such a manner. The surgery center will also have the emergency equipment and training needed should an emergency arise.
  3. Find references you can trustTalk to friends and/or relatives who have had a plastic surgery procedure and ask them about the doctor who performed their procedure – they will give you honest opinions and recommendations. You should also check out online reviews to see what other patients are saying about the doctor and their experience.
  4. Be prepared and ask questionsWhen you have made the choice to have a procedure, be sure that you are prepared – understand what your motives are for the surgery and what specific things you want the surgeon to change. When you come in for your consultation with the doctor, you will likely have many questions and/or concerns – bring them with you. The doctor is there to help you – to answer all of your questions, help alleviate any concerns you have, and ultimately achieve your desired outcome.

Once you speak with the right surgeon, one who is educated, experienced and board-certified, you will understand the risks, but also the rewards you can achieve to getting the body of your dreams.
