What is the difference between IPL (Intense Pulse Light) and BBL (Broadband Light)?
Laser season is upon us! Let’s take a minute to discuss the difference between IPL and BBL. IPL was the first light therapy treatment for skin, introduced in the 1990s, for pigmentation issues and vascular lesions. Using light waves of many different wavelengths (like a photo flash) that deliver heat to the area being treated on the skin, pigmented cells absorb the light energy. That energy is then converted into heat, which destroys the unwanted pigmentation. Both IPL and BBL use lightwaves to treat sun damage, enlarged pores, Rosacea, fine lines & wrinkles, uneven tone and texture, as well as acne and acne scars; however, BBL is considered to be the new and improved version of IPL.
Is BBL more effective than IPL?
In a nutshell: It is. There are many manufacturers of IPL devices; however, BBL is specific to the manufacturer Sciton, and that is the device we use at Broadway Plastic Surgery. Sciton’s BBL technology offers customizable settings. The different filtering capabilities and energy levels, allow the provider to specifically treat the patient’s concerns with greater precision, which makes BBL superior to traditional IPL. Additionally, BBL offers a longer lasting result. After 3-4 treatments studies have shown that its technology actually changes the patient’s gene expression, representing more youthful looking skin. No other IPL device can make this claim to the extent that BBL can. BBL is noninvasive and non-ablative which means very little downtime for the patient. Improved skin tone and pigmentation are the most significant benefits for this type of treatment.
Most skin types can be successfully treated with BBL; however, we recommend a consultation with one of our highly trained clinicians for the best treatment option for each patient’s aesthetic goals and issues. Call us at 303-647-1435 to schedule your appointment. We look forward to seeing you.
