You have probably heard about Botox and its ability to decrease the visibility of wrinkles on your forehead and near your eyes. But, did you also know that you can also use it for treating several conditions such as TMJ or chronic migraines? At Broadway Plastic Surgery, we have been using Botox to treat our patients for the below conditions, as well as for physical beauty.
TMJ
TMJ or Temporomandibular Joint tension is a condition that can be alleviated with Botox treatments. For these patients, Botox is injected into the muscles in the jaw that are responsible for clenching the jaw. Our patients experience relief in jaw tension, headaches caused by jaw tension, and even in the aesthetic appearance of jaw muscles that have become overworked and enlarged over time.

Chronic Twitchy Eyelid
Twitchy eyelid or Blepharospasm is a condition where the eyelid twitches involuntarily. In most cases, the spasms that cause this will go away on their own in a few days. In some cases, where the condition is chronic, we have treated our patients with small Botox injections in the upper eyelid. This relaxes those muscles so that the twitching can cease.
Excessive Sweating
Excessive sweating or Hyperhidrosis is a condition where the sweat glands are overactive, which can be uncomfortable and embarrassing. For these patients, Botox is injected into the area where the patient is experiencing excessive sweating, which is most commonly under the arm; however, other areas where this condition might exist include the face, palms of hands, and even the feet. Botox blocks the nerves responsible for activating sweat glands, and this treatment has proven to be successful for many patients.
Chronic Migraine Headaches
For patients who suffer from chronic Migraine Headaches, which is 15 or more per month, Botox has proven to be an effective treatment. For these patients, Botox is injected around the pain fibers, blocking nerve endings. Recent studies suggest that Botox not only relaxes the muscles, but it also provides direct pain relief because the release of chemicals associated with pain is not picked up by the relaxed nerve endings. This treatment is more effective on patients who have a larger number of headaches per month and who receive frequent treatments of Botox injections. The rate of success correlates with frequency of Migraines and frequency of treatments.

There are even more symptoms and conditions where Botox has been proven to be effective. One common thread in this type of treatment, whether it is for wrinkles or another medical condition, is that multiple treatments are required. Botox will eventually wear off and muscles and nerves will return to their original state.
