Expectations After Breast Augmentation Surgery
Breast augmentation surgery, while fairly common in our country, is still surgery. Your body needs time to recover from anesthesia, to heal and to get used to its new shape and size. Every woman recovers at a different rate, but a definite recovery period is still necessary and important to your overall final results.
recover faster and more comfortably
During your initial consultation, and after your surgery is completed, Dr. Broadway and Dr. Cisco will discuss avoiding activities that require bending, stretching, lifting or straining, and will emphasize the importance of getting lots of rest. Following Dr. Broadway’s and Dr. Cisco’s instructions carefully will help you to recover faster and more comfortably.
Most women can return to regular activities after one week, but will still be cautioned to avoid strenuous activities. Women who opt for subglandular breast implant placement may recover somewhat more quickly than women who choose submuscular placement.
The First 48 Hours
The first 48 hours after your breast augmentation surgery, you may feel somewhat uncomfortable. Common issues during this brief time are fatigue and breast pain. This can be managed with pain medication, but some soreness will persist. Having a loved one or friend with you during the first few days can be very comforting.
The First Few Months
Most patients (but not all) will be off pain medication within 2-4 days. Normal activity usual is seen within the first week and at two weeks, light exercise can be started.
The implants should be fully settled into place within two months or so and the final results will be within 6 months. The incisions will continue heal for twelve to eighteen months slowly improving in appearance.
A Word About Scars
The incisions from your breast augmentation surgery will turn firm and pink, for about six weeks post-surgery. Eventually, the scars will dramatically fade, but will never completely disappear. Fortunately, in the hands of a highly skilled cosmetic surgeon like Dr. Broadway and Dr. Cisco, special suture techniques will ensure incisions are properly placed and closed so that your scars will fade until they are almost impossible to detect. Following doctor’s orders after surgery is another way you can contribute to scars that are barely noticeable. We supply our patients with a silicone gel scar cream to enhance healing and minimize scarring.
Our practice offers all breast augmentation surgery patients three complimentary in-office scar treatments following your surgery with a Skin Essentials staff member. Depending on your needs, Impulse Light Therapy (IPL) or microdermabrasion therapy can be used to ensure that your scars are minimized as much as possible.
